Zanzibar Gem

Zamioculcas zamiifolia

Even the blackest of black thumbs would find it hard to hurt Zanzibar Gem. When we say it thrives on neglect, we mean it: it thrives on neglect.

Also known as ZZ plant, Zuzu plant, aroid palm, eternity plant and emerald palm, this plant’s reputation for being hard to kill is legendary. Its deep, glossy green leaves will continue to look stylish even if it’s ignored.

Zanzibar Gem’s ability to live through long periods without a drink is thanks to its rhizomatic tuber roots that absorb and store water.

Problems arise from overwatering. Allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. In most cases, waters monthly in the colder months and every couple of weeks through the warmer ones should be enough. You can occasionally use a slow release fertiliser to support growth.

Sign of overwatering may include falling leaves, yellowing leaves or brown stems. You can clip off damaged foliage and allow soil to completely dry before watering the next time.

Place in an indirectly lit position, away from direct sunlight that can burn or yellow leaves.

All part of the Zanzibar Gem plant are toxic, so place in a location that is out of reach from little hands or pets that may be inclined to take a bite out of your house plants!
