Monstera – Fruit Salad Plant

Monstera deliciosa

Monstera like a bright position indoors but can handle less light quit well too. Avoid placing in direct sunlight, especially late afternoon sun, because the leaves can yellow or even burn. They will grow best and most dramatically in a room that is bright but indirectly lit.

In the warmer months, water weekly and feed occasionally with slow-release fertiliser.  When watering in a pot without a drainage hole and around the size of the one pictured, about a cup of water is sufficient. This will provide enough water so that the soil is evenly damp, without leaving too much water around roots. In the cooler months you can ease off to water every couple of weeks.

When you’re watering a monstera in a pot that has drainage, water evenly around the top until the water starts draining out at the bottom. This will give sufficient water to keep the soil damp throughout. You’ll know you need to water again when you stick your finger into about an inch of the soil and it’s dried.

Eventually your monstera will start developing aerial roots. As the plant grows you can provide a stake to support the plant and these aerial roots may start to take hold around the support. You’re best, however, to help the plant to the stake with twist ties or twine.

Occasionally clean leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust to ensure the plant can breathe at its best and to prevent any possibility of disease.
