Not all flowers can be heroes: Filler flowers that help make a posy shine

Filler Flowers

They’re what florists refer to as filler flowers. They provide colour, tone, shape and volume without detracting from the hero focal flowers.

On their own, fillers aren’t that exciting but paired with the right flowers, they can make all the difference in a posy or arrangement.

Here are some of our favourite picks that we use in our posies in season.

Geraldton Wax

These little Aussie beauties are native to Western Australia. Their sweet honey scent and petite flower head make them a killer filler. We love using them both in bud and flower form. They come in shades of pink and white naturally, and are often dyed many other colours of the rainbow. Geraldton Wax are long lasting like most natives and are in season from June to October.

Not as boring as their names suggests, Stock flowers come in a wide range of colours, including pink, white, yellow, red, purple, and burgundy. Great for adding some height and volume. The flower stalk consists of fragrant clusters of four-petalled flowers, which are full and luscious. In season from April to October.

Feather Celosia

Long upward spikes covered in silvery coloured feather-like flowers. That’s the best way to describe these beauties. Not too commonly used, we love Feather Celosia’s unique shape and texture. Found in pale pink to bright purple, as a filler they add that something a little bit different to our posies. They have a rather limited season unfortunately, from about February to May.
